Description

For all persons given the Diabetes Care Survey (DCS) and have been told they have diabetes, DIAEYEXNV indicates whether the respondent has never had an eye exam in which their pupils were dilated. If the respondent answers "yes," the respondent is indicating that they have never had an eye exam.

For those people who have had an eye exam, the following variables contain information about the length of time since their last exam:

• DIAEYEXNXYR: respondent had an eye exam in which their pupils were dilated in the subsequent calendar year

• DIAEYEXCALYR: respondent had an eye exam in which their pupils were dilated in the current calendar year

• DIAEYEXPVYR: respondent had an eye exam in which their pupils were dilated in the previous calendar year

• DIAEYBFPVYR: respondent had an eye exam in which their pupils were dilated before the previous calendar year

DIAEYEXNV is one of a set of variables comprising the DCS, a supplemental, self-administered pencil-and-paper survey about how respondents treat their diabetes. For related variables and more information, please see DIACONF.

Comparability

There is a slight change to the way the DCS collects information about an eye exam over time. In 2000 and 2001, the DCS asked, "When was the last time you had an eye exam in which your pupils were dilated?" and respondents were only able to choose one year, or that they have never had an eye exam. Beginning in 2002, the DCS instead asks, "Which of the following year(s) did you have an eye exam in which your pupils were dilated?" and respondents can select multiple years, or that they have never had an eye exam. Due to the similarity of these questions, IPUMS MEPS staff chose to harmonize the data from these two questions. Otherwise, this variable is completely comparable over time.
