Description

For all persons given the Diabetes Care Survey (DCS) and have been told they have diabetes, DIAEYBFPVYR reports whether the respondent had an eye exam in which their pupils were dilated at a point in time before the previous calendar year. DIAEYBFPVYR is one of a set of variables comprising the DCS, a supplemental, self-administered pencil-and-paper survey about how respondents treat their diabetes. For related variables and more information, please see DIACONF.

Comparability

There is a slight change to the way the DCS collects information about an eye exam over time. In 2000 and 2001, the DCS asked "When was the last time you had an eye exam in which your pupils were dilated?" and respondents were only able to choose one year, or that they have never had an eye exam. Beginning in 2002, the DCS asks "Which of the following year(s) did you have an eye exam in which your pupils were dilated?" and respondents can select multiple years, or that they have never had an eye exam. Due to the similarity of these questions, IPUMS MEPS staff chose to harmonize the data from these two questions. Otherwise, this variable is completely comparable over time.
