ICD9PROC
ICD-9-CM code for procedure

Description

For all current conditions, ICD9PROC reports the ICD-9-CM procedure code. To preserve confidentiality, AHRQ collapsed the fully specified ICD-9-CM procedure codes into 2-digit category codes. Beginning in 2016, conditions are coded to ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes (ICD10CODE) and procedure codes are not offered.

IPUMS MEPS reports the universe for each variable based on a thorough review of the original MEPS documentation. Investigating the data may reveal cases that do not meet the stated universe. Users are encouraged to validate universes for their analyses.

During the household component, respondents are asked about medical conditions but not procedures. Procedures are coded from the verbatim text recorded by the interviewer when the respondent is asked about medical conditions. Due to this, procedures are under-reported. AHRQ warns, "Analysts should not use available data on procedures to make estimates of frequencies of specific procedures or to extrapolate to national estimates." See ICD9CODE for more details on the data collection and coding processes for the fully-specified ICD-9-CM codes.

ICD9PROC is coded to "996" (NIU) when the verbatim text strictly denotes a condition and, from 2003-2015, to "999" (Unknown-not ascertained) when the verbatim text strictly denotes a procedure, but is not specific enough to assign a procedure code.

ICD9PROC is on the condition record (see RECTYPE for more details on the different record types in IPUMS MEPS). Variables offered on the condition record through IPUMS MEPS are derived from the Medical Conditions file provided by AHRQ. Please see our overview of the event, medical conditions, and prescribed medicines variables, including how those variables are offered through IPUMS MEPS, and general considerations to keep in mind when conducting analyses using these variables.
