CONDRD2
Has condition information in round 2

Description

For current conditions associated with a medical event or prescribed medicine during the year, and for current conditions before 2018, where the person is in relative year 1 of data collection (RELYR), CONDRD2 reports whether the condition was first reported or selected in Round 2. Beginning in 2018, the condition may be reported or selected only when the person reports an event that occurred due to the condition.

IPUMS MEPS reports the universe for each variable based on a thorough review of the original MEPS documentation. Investigating the data may reveal cases that do not meet the stated universe. Users are encouraged to validate universes for their analyses.

Pregnancies, Prenatal Visits, or Deliveries
From 1996 to 2006, this variable is not applicable for most pregnancies, prenatal visits, or deliveries due to the questionnaire design. From 2007 to 2009, due to confidentiality concerns, pregnancy conditions for women under 16 and over 44 are marked as selected for the round in which the condition was first reported even if no events are connected to the pregnancy condition. For women between the ages of 16 and 44, pregnancy conditions are only marked as selected if there is an event or prescribed medicine connected to the condition.

Related Variables

CONDRD2 can be used in conjunction with CONDRD1, CONDRD3, CONDRD4, CONDRD5, and CONDRN to determine when the condition was first reported and in which rounds the person was affected by the condition.

From 1996 to 2006, CONDRD2 is not reconciled with CONDRN.

Beginning with Panel 12 in 2007 it is possible that a priority condition may not be selected in the round in which it was first reported because priority conditions are asked in the context of "has the person ever been told by a doctor or other health care professional that they have (condition)?"

CONDRD2 is on the condition record (see RECTYPE for more details on the different record types in IPUMS MEPS). Variables offered on the condition record through IPUMS MEPS are derived from the Medical Conditions file provided by AHRQ. Please see our overview of the event, medical conditions, and prescribed medicines variables, including how those variables are offered through IPUMS MEPS, and general considerations to keep in mind when conducting analyses using these variables.

Comparability

CONDRD2 is constructed by AHRQ, but the way in which it is constructed has varied over time due to changes in criteria for records being included on the AHRQ Medical Conditions file. Beginning in 2018, the condition may be reported or selected only when the person reports an event that occurred due to the condition. Prior to 2018, conditions could be selected if they were first reported in the current round, were connected to an event, or were selected as a serious condition not linked to any events. See the user note for more information on the criteria for records being included on the AHRQ Medical Conditions file.

Additionally, how pregnancy conditions are reported varies over time.
