Description
For all current conditions associated with a medical event or prescribed medicine during the year, and for all current conditions before 2018, CONDNUM is a within person enumerator that indicates the condition number for a respondent. CONDNUM must be combined with PANELX, DUIDX and PIDX to uniquely identify conditions across all MEPS data. IPUMS MEPS offers the constructed variable MEPSCONDID, created by concatenating the values of PANELX, DUIDX, PIDX, and CONDNUM.
The 2019 Survey Description states that a CONDNUM "beginning with '9' reflects a condition that was added during the editing process."
CONDNUMÂ is on the condition record (see RECTYPE for more details on the different record types in IPUMS MEPS). Variables offered on the condition record through IPUMS MEPS are derived from the Medical Conditions file provided by AHRQ. Please see our overview of the event, medical conditions, and prescribed medicines variables, including how those variables are offered through IPUMS MEPS, and general considerations to keep in mind when conducting analyses using these variables.
From 1996-2017, CONDNUM is a 4-digit numeric variable. Beginning in 2018, CONDNUM is a 3-digit numeric variable.
