Description
For all condition-event link records, CONDIDJ is an AHRQ-generated identifier created by combining DUPERSIDJ and CONDNUM. From 1996-2017 CONDLKJ uniquely identifiers condition records within a panel. To uniquely identify records across all MEPS panels, please see MEPSCONDIDJ. Beginning in 2018, CONDIDJ uniquely identifies records across panels due to changes in the construction of DUIDJ to add PANELJ to the first two digits of the DUIDJ identifier. Also beginning in 2018, CONDNUM was reduced from 4 digits wide to 3 digits wide.
Condition-Event Record Linking
The condition and event / prescribed medicine refill records can be joined together by using the condition-event link records. The CONDIDJ is on the condition-event link record and is the same as CONDID on the condition record. Due to changes in how CONDID is constructed over time, IPUMS MEPS recommends using MEPSCONDID and MEPSCONDIDJ to join the condition and event / prescribed medicine refill records.
See our user note for more details on how to join the different record types and an overview of the event, medical conditions, and prescribed medicines variables, how those variables are offered through IPUMS MEPS, and general considerations to keep in mind when conducting analyses using these variables.
From 1996-2017, CONDIDJ is a 12-character string variable. Beginning in 2018, CONDIDJ is a 13-character string variable.
