Description

For all persons, MEPSID2 is an IPUMS MEPS-generated variable that uniquely identifies respondents across MEPS panels. It is created by combining DUID, PID, and PANEL. To bridge a change in PANEL from 1 to 2 digits wide, MEPSID2 is equal to "0" + DUID + PID + "9" for respondents in MEPS panel 9 in 2005. Otherwise MEPSID2 values are created as described above.

Beginning in 2018, AHRQ modified DUID and DUPERSID on the original MEPS data files to add PANEL to the first two digits, making DUPERSID identical to MEPSID. IPUMS MEPS had previously offered MEPSID2 as MEPSID, but revised MEPSID to mirror the order of component variables offered on the original 2018 MEPS files. MEPSID2 is not available after 2017.

Comparability

With the exception of the special handling of Panel 9 members in 2005 described in the main variable description tab, this variable is completely comparable over time.
