Description

For all persons, MEPSID2RD is an IPUMS MEPS-generated variable that uniquely identifies respondents across MEPS panels. It is created by combining DUIDRD, PIDRD, and PANELRD. To bridge a change in PANELRD from 1 to 2 digits wide, MEPSID2 is equal to "0" + DUIDRD + PIDRD + "9" for respondents in MEPS panel 9 in 2005. Otherwise MEPSID2RD values are created as described above.

Beginning in 2018, AHRQ modified DUIDRD and DUPERSIDRD on the original MEPS data files to add PANELRD to the first two digits, making DUPERSIDRD identical to MEPSIDRD. IPUMS MEPS had previously offered MEPSID2RD as MEPSIDRD, but revised MEPSIDRD to mirror the order of component variables offered on the original 2018 MEPS files. MEPSID2RD is not available after 2017.

Comparability

With the exception of the special handling of Panel 9 members in 2005 described in the main variable description tab, this variable is completely comparable over time.
