Description
For all persons age 18 and older in Rounds 3 or 5 (ELIG1231), EXERMODVIG5D indicates if the person now spends half an hour or more in moderate or vigorous physical activity at least five times a week. The 2022 MEPS questionnaire help text states:
IPUMS MEPS reports the universe for each variable based on a thorough review of the original MEPS documentation. Investigating the data may reveal cases that do not meet the stated universe. Users are encouraged to validate universes for their analyses.
Beginning in 2021, two related variables were included about moderate exercise: MODEXERDAYS (Number of days engaged in moderate exercise, last 30 days) and MODEXERDUR (Average number of minutes spent engaged in moderate exercise).

Comparability
Other than a change in question placement in the MEPS questionnaire in 2018, EXERMODVIG5D is completely comparable over time. When EXERMODVIG5D was introduced to the MEPS questionnaire in 2011, it was asked as part of a set of questions on preventive health in the Preventive Care supplemental section, alongside questions on topics such as the frequency of dental and physical check-ups, flu shots, and other preventive health exams. In 2018, it was moved to the Additional Healthcare Questions section alongside items on preventive care behaviors, such as smoking cigarettes.
