Description

For all dental visits (EVENTYPE = 5), DENTCLN indicates if the visit included cleaning, prophylaxis, or polishing. Responses recorded in DENTCLN are unedited; an edited version of DENTCLN is available in DENTCLNX. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality advises analysts to use the revised versions of the dental visit variables in their analyses but also makes these unedited versions available. Beginning in 2017, information about whether the visit included dental cleaning, prophylaxis, or polishing was combined with information about whether the visit included periodontal recall (DENTRCLVIS) in the variable DENTCLNRCL.

DENTCLN is one of a set of dental visit variables reporting the type of dental provider seen, the dental services received, and the total expenditures overall and by payment source associated with each dental visit.
