ACCINJUR
Condition due to accident or injury

Description

For all current conditions associated with a medical event or prescribed medicine during the year, and for all current conditions before 2018, ACCINJUR reports if the condition was due to an accident or injury. Beginning with Panel 12 in 2007, only non-priority conditions (PRTYCOND) are eligible to be reported as being due to an accident or injury; priority conditions are coded as "No" (1).

IPUMS MEPS reports the universe for each variable based on a thorough review of the original MEPS documentation. Investigating the data may reveal cases that do not meet the stated universe. Users are encouraged to validate universes for their analyses.

ACCINJUR is on the condition record (see RECTYPE for more details on the different record types in IPUMS MEPS). Variables offered on the condition record through IPUMS MEPS are derived from the Medical Conditions file provided by AHRQ. Please see our overview of the event, medical conditions, and prescribed medicines variables, including how those variables are offered through IPUMS MEPS, and general considerations to keep in mind when conducting analyses using these variables.

Comparability

Beginning with Panel 12 in 2007 only non-priority conditions are eligible to be reported as being due to an accident or injury; priority conditions are coded as "No" (1). For conditions reported by respondents in Panel 11 or earlier, priority conditions are eligible to be reported as being due to an accident or injury. This difference is due to a change in how priority conditions are identified. See our user note for more information.
