Description
For persons aged 17-59 who are in scope, NOWAFRD reports if the person is currently on full-time active duty status in the Armed Forces. See the Comparability Tab for information on the elimination responses for round 3 of relative year 2 and round 1 of relative year 1 in calendar year 2005.

Comparability
AHRQ does not include information on the "31" round of this variable in 2005, citing changes to how MEPS-HC collects information on military status in 2005. In 2005 only, persons in relative year one of the panel are missing round 1 data; persons in relative year two of the panel are missing round 3 data for this variable. These cases have been assigned as out of universe by IPUMS.
In 1996, NOWAFRD only includes persons aged 17-59 who are eligible and in rounds 1 and 2 of data collection; in subsequent years, RUSIZERD is available for all persons aged 17-59. Otherwise, this variable is completely comparable across time.
Universe
- 1996: Persons aged 17-59 who are eligible (ELIGRD = 4) and in rounds 1 or 2 of data collection.
- 1997-2004: Persons aged 17-59, in round.
- 2005: Persons aged 17-59, in rounds 4/2 and 5/3.
- 2006-2022: Persons aged 17-59, in round.
