Description

For all current or institutionalized persons aged 18 and older who have not been diagnosed with an arthritis condition (ARTHGLUPEV), JOINTPAINRD indicates if a person has had pain, aching, stiffness, or swelling around a joint in the previous 12 months. This question is not intended to be an indicator of an arthritis diagnosis. Prior to 2018, this question was asked of all eligible people regardless of their history of arthritis.

Collection frequency and timing for JOINTPAINRD change over time. From 2007-2016 this question was asked in rounds 1 and 3 for panels in relative year 1 and rounds 3 and 5 for panels in relative year 2. In 2020 and 2021 this variable was also collected multiple times across the panels extended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2000-2006, 2017-2019, and 2022 forward, this question was only asked once per year and those responses are recorded in the annual-level variable JOINTPAIN.

JOINTPAINRD is collected as part of the Priority Conditions Enumeration (PE) section. These conditions were selected due to their relatively high prevalence and because generally accepted standards for appropriate clinical care have been developed.

Comparability

This variable is completely comparable from 2007-2016. Respondents were asked this question regardless of their history of arthritis.

In 2020 and 2021 the timing of the enumeration varies depending on the extended panels. Data for 2020 includes responses from panel 23 round 7, panel 24 rounds 3 and 5, and panel 25 rounds 1 and 3. Data for 2021 includes responses from panel 23 round 7, panel 24 rounds 5 and 7, panel 25 round 3, and panel 26 rounds 1 and 3. Data from 2020-2021 also reflect the 2018 change in universe for JOINTPAIN, and do not include persons who had previously reported having been diagnosed with an arthritis condition (ARTHGLUPEV).
