Description

For all current or institutionalized persons aged 18 and older who have not been diagnosed with an arthritis condition (ARTHGLUPEV), JOINTPAIN indicates if a person has had pain, aching, stiffness, or swelling around a joint in the previous 12 months. This question is not intended to be an indicator of an arthritis diagnosis. Prior to 2018, this question was asked of all eligible people regardless of their history of arthritis.

Collection frequency and timing for JOINTPAIN change over time. This variable was collected annually from 2000-2006, 2017-2019, and 2022 forward. In other years, this question was fielded more than once per year and those responses are recorded in the round-level variable JOINTPAINRD.

JOINTPAIN is collected as part of the Priority Conditions Enumeration (PE) section. These conditions were selected due to their relatively high prevalence and because generally accepted standards for appropriate clinical care have been developed.

Comparability

The meaning of this variable is comparable over time, but the timing of when it was fielded changes. From 2000-2006, JOINTPAIN was asked during round 3 for panels in relative year 1 and round 5 for panels in relative year 2. From 2017-2019 and 2022 forward, it was asked during round 1 for panels in relative year 1 and round 3 for panels in relative year 2.

Beginning in 2018, JOINTPAIN was not asked if a person previously reported having been diagnosed with an arthritis condition (ARTHGLUPEV). Prior to 2018, JOINTPAIN was asked regardless of the respondents' history of arthritis.
