INSCOP
Inscope status for the portion of Round 5/3 that covers the current year

Description

For all persons, INSCOP specifies detailed information about their in-scope status during rounds 3 or 5 (depending on whether they were in the first or second year of data collection RELYR) of the survey year. A person is considered in scope if they are a member of a MEPS household, and is a member of the U.S. civilian, noninstitutionalized population.

INSCOP provides more detailed information in-scope status than the related variables INSCOP1231 (in-scope status on December 31 of the year) and INSCOPEV (whether they were ever in scope during the year), such as whether persons were in scope for the entire Round 3/5 period and, if out of scope, whether they were in scope for a portion of the interview round or out of scope for the entire round. For the COVID-extended panels, which retained households beyond the typical two-year MEPS data collection period, INSCOP also specifies whether persons in rounds 7 and 9 (in relative years 3 and 4, respectively), were in scope.

In addition to INSCOP, IPUMS MEPS offers information about in-scope status in three other variables, each of which refers to a different time period:

  • INSCOP1231: In-scope status on December 31 of the current year
  • INSCOPEV: Whether person was ever in scope during the current year
  • INSCOPRD In-scope status in current round (round-level variable)

For more information on the meaning of in scope or other technical terms for MEPS data collection and analysis, please see the IPUMS MEPS Glossary of Key Concepts and Terms.
