Comparability

The ethnic/ancestry groups that respondents were allowed to choose from changed over time. In 1996, respondents could choose "Puerto Rican," "Cuban," "Mexican, Mexican-American, Mexicano, Chicano," "Other Latin American," "Other Spanish," or "Other." In 2002, the categories "Dominican" and "Central or South American" were added. In 2013, the option "Multiple Hispanic" was added, though most people in panel 17 received the previous version of the question; the new set of categories including "Multiple Hispanic" were used for all panels beginning in 2014.
