Description
For all persons who were in scope in and were ever diagnosed with asthma (ASTHMAEV or ASTHMARD), ASTHPREV reports if the person had ever used preventive asthma medicine; MEPS documentation notes that this is the kind of medicine used every day to protect the lungs and prevent asthma attacks and can include both oral medicine and inhalers.
Collection frequency and timing for ASTHPREV changes over time. This variable was collected annually in 2003-2006, 2018, 2019, and 2022 forward. In other years, this question was fielded more than once per year and those responses are recorded in the round-level variable ASTHPREVRD.
ASTHPREV is one of several asthma-related questions included in the Priority Conditions Enumeration (PE) section. For a complete list of these variables, please see the variable description for ASTHMAEV.

From 2018-2019 and 2022 forward, it was asked during round 1 for panels in relative year 1 and round 3 for panels in relative year 2.
