Description
For all current or institutionalized persons who have ever been diagnosed with asthma (ASTHMAEV or ASTHMARD), ASTHATTACK indicates if they have had an asthma attack within the previous 12 months. Respondents who answered yes were then asked follow-up questions about their use of medications such as inhalers (ASTHPINQUICKRD), preventative medicines (ASTHPREVRD), and peak flow meters (ASTHPEAKUSRD).
Collection frequency and timing for ASTHATTACK changes over time. This variable was collected annually from 2000-2006, 2017-2019, and 2022 forward. In other years, this question was fielded more than once per year and those responses are recorded in the round-level variable ASTHATTACKRD.
ASTHATTACK is one of several asthma-related questions included in the Priority Conditions Enumeration (PE) section. For a complete list of these variables, please see the variable description for ASTHMAEV.

Comparability
The meaning of this variable is comparable over time, but the timing of when the survey question was fielded changes. From 2000-2006, ASTHATTACK was asked during round 3 for panels in relative year 1 and round 5 for panels in relative year 2. From 2017-2019 and 2022 forward, it was asked during round 1 for panels in relative year 1 and round 3 for panels in relative year 2.
